'Nathan Hall + Perc Ens- Gentle Worship'

Percussion trio Perc Ens with composer Nathan Hall release Gentle Worship, a collection of music compositions and improvisations recorded at The TANK Center for Sonic Arts in Rangely, CO in 2023. The album was conceptualized from a collection of baguette-shaped ancient lithophones found in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, and in collaboration with the leading lithophone archeologist in Colorado, Marilyn Martorano.

Perc Ens is a minimalism percussion ensemble, performing intense, mostly-acoustic compositions and improvisations. Inspired by composers Steve Reich and Terry Riley, Perc Ens achieves moments of flourished epiphany juxtaposed against droning repetition, like a tacitly humble solo shaker. Perc Ens has many iterations of live performance, so you might see marimba, drum set, lights, chromatic pitched instruments, sermons, or hand percussion, all prepared to showcase the melody, rhythm, and timbre of each instrument. A little sound taste here!

Amazing Nathan Hall is an artist and composer who explores sound, site, and sexuality. His creative works are situated in between music, visual art, performance, and multimedia. His works have been performed in 18 countries and 24 US States. He often creates wonder and surprise out of simple, overlooked subjects–magic out of the everyday. Nathan’s work with the Clyfford Still Museum spans over 10 years including the exhibition of the terrace gardens at the museum (ongoing). His passions for science, travel (particularly the Arctic), and stories of lived history have led to a Fulbright in Iceland, the McKnight Visiting Composer Fellowship, a project award from FEMA, and a New Music USA grant, among many other residencies and awards.

Nathan holds his Doctorate of Musical Arts from CU Boulder and currently teaches music composition at the University of Denver and at RMCAD. He is an artist in residence at RedLine Contemporary Art Center and lives in Denver with his husband Andy.
